As you start to progress your plans or achieve the goals you set yourself it is a fair assumption that you will be happier in all facets of your life. As stated earlier I can imagine that some people may say that this is an impossible thing to do, especially with all the requirements of service life that we have to meet, but no matter what activity you set out to achieve it is made all that much easier if you have a plan. Before I wrap this article up and say my goodbyes I would firstly like to welcome all our new CKs who successfully completed their Initial Category Training at ADFSC and are now out and about in the RAN. It’s great to have you as members of the CK family and I wish you all the best in your future career and ask you all to get stuck in and take advantage of every opportunity you can, especially considering Submarine Service and Minor War vessels once you have consolidated Part I of you competency journal. I have met many of the SMNCKs who are in their first year while conducting Category Sponsor visits to establishments and ship’s. Of note, at the time that this article will go to print, the CK category has 100 SMNCKs of which 19 SMNCKs are at sea. we develop our resilience and resolve to continually improve ourselves both personally and professionally. In regards to the category’s health, it could be in better shape with a current short fall of approximately 78 personnel across all ranks. However, this does not take into account our current training force which comprises approximately 55 sailors from Recruit through to Seaman. Therefore, the category is short by approximately 23 personnel. It is important to note these numbers do not include personnel that have been classified as MEC 301 or above, and therefore cannot at this point in time fill a position on a sea going vessel. I remain hopeful that the implementation of the Five Year Career Plan (FYCP) will assist in managing the careers of the Stewards and therefore improve retention. Accordingly, the responsibility rests upon individuals to advise their career managers and supervisors of their intentions. This will equip career managers to establish a robust work force model that will meet the needs of both the individual and the category. I would like to congratulate those personnel who have accepted promotion over the last twelve months; also those personnel who have indicated an interest in applying for Retinue positions. I cannot emphasise enough how important these positions are to ensure the long time viability of the Steward branch. I encourage all Stewards to aspire to be selected for one of these positions, and I can say from personal experience that yes the work is demanding, but the rewards both personally and professionally will stand you in good stead for your future within the Navy. FRoM THE STEWARdS CATEGoRY SPoNSoR By WOSTD Phillip Crisp This year has seen many new developments for the Stewards category, including professional books which are given to sailors on completion of either the Intermediate Stewards or Advanced Stewards Courses. This has also dove tailed with the alignment of the Stewards branch to formally recognise qualifications through the Tourism Hospitality and Catering Institute. As you all should be aware by now, another major achievement of the Steward Category is the endorsement of a Competency Task Journal (CTJ) for Stewards including LSSTDs and POSTDs. The advent of this CTJ ensures that qualifications issued by the RAN as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) meet the needs of a RTO and the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) standards. The first issue of the CTJ was to the intermediate STD’s that completed their course in Nov 07. I have also undertaken numerous visits to ships and establishments and I have been tremendously impressed by the enthusiasm displayed within the Steward category. It is during these conversations, discussions and sometimes e-mails that I have discovered issues which may affect the retention of individuals and in some cases I have been able to directly assist in retaining members who thought the only option available to them was to discharge. I strongly urge anyone contemplating discharge because they think they have no other option available to them to speak openly and honestly with their Divisional Staff, the reason being quite simply, the Navy wants to retain good sailors. The Divisional system should be used in consultation with relevant authorities including DSCM and career managers. I expect that the tempo for both personnel on land and at sea will continue to the same drum beat and this will include many challenges for both the category and the Navy. These challenges will inevitably lead to change, which is something we should embrace, because it is through change that My discussions with the stewards of the fleet has been in the most, positive and responsive to the challenges that we face as stewards in a modern fighting fleet including improving on our professionalism and knowledge to allow us to be effective in our core and many ancillary duties. The main challenge for the senior stewards throughout the fleet is to deliver an understanding to the junior stewards of our role as part of a ship’s company and the contributions we make to enhance and maintain the crew’s morale, through the services we provide in the wardroom to the Officers and to the rest of the ship’s company at the canteen. In my previous article (winter edition) I mentioned the last time I was in Canberra was 1985 as an eager SMNSTD posted to the wardroom at HMAS HARMAN. I posted out of HARMAN on 14 Jan 86 to HMAS TORRENS. However, I find that the next time I move from Canberra it will be to the civilian world; leave and discharge. It has been with a great deal of thought and reflection that I have made the decision to move out of the permanent Navy. However, I will consider doing reserve time if an opportunity presents itself. After 23 years, I have had the opportunity to work with some terrific people, many of whom are still serving. The list would be far too extensive for me to mention who has assisted me throughout my career, but to those people I would like to say a heart felt thank you.
