NAVY SUPPLY NEWSLETTER SPRING 2008 17 SoAC TRAINING SoAC 01/08 – February-June 08 (Course Manager: LCdR Carlin) The first course under the Supply Officer Application Course (SOAC) has supplied the Fleet with the first “trail blazers” of the new delineation of responsibilities between the ASO, DSO and SO on an MFU as set by the PQ Sponsor. They endured a number of program changes, however, they took it all in their stride and made their mark on the Supply world by acting as the test bed for the new and improved RSF and were also the architects of the new Fleet Budget Register. The course had the “Lemon Award” which was eventually “awarded” to SBLT Lucy Gaylor on their last day at the School for having the ship that’s location was unknown at the time of graduation; recognising that she would probably be standing on FBE wharf on the following Monday, bags packed and no place to go. This course is currently three months into their 12 months as ASOs and they have already proven to be an asset to their Ships Company and the Supply Department. Many of the course members were crucial in assisting with implementing standardised systems and they continue to provide valuable feedback to the School from the fleet. BACK L TO R: MIDN CHRIS (CLARKIE) CLARKE, LCDR ANDY HOBBS, LEUT NOEL KIRK WITH CLASS MASCOT POOMBA, SBLT PETER (CHAPPIE) CHAPMAN, MIDN MEGAN HAINES FRONT L TO R: MIDN PETER (GILLIE) GILKINSON, MIDN SARA MOONEY, MIDN BLAKE (JWAC) HERRON, SBLT NICKI NOAKES SoAC 02/08 – July-November 2008 (Course Manager: LEUT Kean) From the class mascot POOMBA to the “old man” jokes aimed at LCDR Hobbs and LEUT Kirk, this course, although only half way through, has bonded exceptionally well and taken the mantel of official pilot of the SOAC continuum with gusto and given the training staff some very valuable input so far. Future courses will no doubt appreciate the hard work of this group of students by benefiting from the work they have put in to assist in improving the program and Instructional aides. Not dissimilar to the 01/08 course, the 02/08 course have a class mascot called POOMBA (the boar from the Lion King for those that are not aware) and it comes complete with the ability to snort, which I hear occasionally when it is time for a break in class and from my voice! POOMBA is held by the class member that makes the silliest comment, such as “Can Zoombies make it through Quarantine Inspections?”, as recognition for not engaging brain before mouth. Watch out for him in the Fleet in November when the class graduates; currently one student has had custody of POOMBA on a regular basis and may be spending a significant amount of sea time on a particular ANZAC Class Frigate! BACK L TO R: SBLT BEN JENSEN, LEUT DAN HERITIER (OI-SS 2), LEUT MICHAEL (JOHNNY) O’KEEFE, SBLT JONATHON (JG) GRAY, SBLT RICHARD (DEL) DELACRUZ, MIDN THERESA WELLS, SBLT LUCY GAYLOR FRONT L TO R: SBLT WARREN LYNCH, MIDN MICK GIBSON, SBLT AMANDA BUCKLAND, LCDR LORINDA CARLIN (OIC-SS), MIDN KRISTEN RUSSO, MIDN MARK CRANNAGE, SBLT JOELENE WATERS Lastly, both Dan and Donna wish to say thank you to everyone that we have worked with over the last 18 months and three years respectively. Your support and friendship has been greatly appreciated and we hope that you extend it to our replacements Lieutenants Tony Case and Tim Lovell who arrive at the School on 15 and 22 Sep respectively; they conduct an extended handover with Donna before she departs for HMAS STUART and the next exciting stage of her career!
