Maritime Logistics Community News : December 2008
18 NAVY SUPPLY NEWSLETTER SPRING 2008 Captain Chris Percival, AM, RAN Annual Memorial Award CAPT Chris Percival joined the RAN as a Supply Officer in 1977 and through his dealings, touched many in the community, being a mentor both professionally and personally to a lucky few. He completed sea postings to HMA Ships SUPPLY, SWAN, WESTRALIA and ANZAC with the last three as charge Supply Officer. Postings to CERBERUS as Officer’s Instructor and Deputy Training Authority (Logistics) – Supply and Health enabled his professional but personal touch to assist in the development of many Supply Personnel. As a result of his professionalism and dedication to duty whilst as RANLO Bahrain in 2002, CAPT Chris Percival was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia. After CAPT Percival passed away on 3 July 2006, there were strong feelings from his classmates and members of the Supply Community wanting to create an award to honour his memory. The Head of Supply Community at the time, CDRE Robinson, wrote to Mrs Sharon Percival and set a train in motion that saw the creation of the “CAPT Chris Percival AM, RAN Annual Memorial Award”. This award will recognise the best performer from the two DSO (Desig) Courses in each calendar year in the areas of academic achievement, teamwork, loyalty, contribution to course and officer like qualities. The award is a memorial shield that will be held in the Supply School and a keepsake for the winner. The inaugural award was made to LEUT Anthony Green on 13 August 07 by Mrs Sharon Percival at Campbell Park Offices in Canberra. Also attending the ceremony was Sharon’s and Chris’ children, Ashlie and Scott, Chris’ brother Steve, the then Chief of Navy vADM Shalders, RADM Robinson, CDRE Richards and many other Canberra based personnel from both the Supply and greater Navy family. LEUT Green, who changed over to become a Supply Officer from LSWTR joined the course from the ADF Warfare Centre and is now in HMAS MELBOURNE as the DSO. He was selected due to his academic performance, work ethic, passion for the Supply Community and his interaction with fellow classmates. We hope that all future recipients of this award can display such qualities so as to truly honour the professionalism and commitment of the late CAPT Chris Percival.
