Smith Farewell to Commodore Grant ian Ferguson, Ran CDRE Grant Ferguson had a long and distinguished career, which commenced in February 1976, some 33 years ago and will come to an end in April 2009. On completion of Naval College, he completed his junior officer training in a range of shore establishments and ships and undertook his common naval officer training at HMAS WATSON and HMAS VAMPIRE. In early 1979 he completed his Basic Supply Course at CERBERUS in Victoria. Having completed his PQ training, his first posting was as the Captain’s Secretary in HMAS STALWART. CDRE Ferguson’s early Supply Officer career included postings to HMAS PLATYPUS, Navy Office and HMAS COONAWARRA where he covered the full gamut of junior supply responsibilities. He undertook his Charge Course in 1987 and the RAN Staff Course in 1988. His first sea charge occurred soon after in June 1988 in HMAS ADELAIDE as a newly promoted LCDR. On completion he returned to Navy Office and was Assistant Secretary to Chief of Navy and was subsequently posted to the US on exchange and worked at the USN’s Ships Part Control Centre in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. He then returned to Australia and took up the position of Manager Spares Assessing and Allowance in Canberra. In 1996, CDRE Ferguson returned to sea as Supply Officer SUCCESS and on completion of his sea time, he completed a range of strategic level jobs in Canberra, including National Support Division in ADHQ. Watson CDRE Ferguson was awarded a Master of Arts Degree from the School at the Centre of Defence and Strategic Studies and subsequently he took up the post of Director Navy Preparedness and Plans – Navy’s preeminent logistics management role. In February 2005 CDRE Ferguson was posted in command of HMAS ALBATROSS, the RAN Air Station. He was promoted to CDRE in December 2006 and assumed the very demanding role of DG Maritime Support. CDRE Ferguson’s last day in the RAN was 9 April 2009. He was farewelled by CN at a function at HMAS HARMAN on 16 April 2009 which was attended by those who have served, or have been associated with CDRE Ferguson throughout his career. A farewell dinner was also held for CDRE Ferguson at HMAS KUTTABUL Wardroom on 5 February 2009 which was attended by Head of Maritime Systems, RADM Boyd Robinson, AM, RAN and Head of Supply Community, CDRE Bob Richards.
