We have a lovely Navy house at Williamstown, which is like Double Bay with a couple of refineries and a power station chucked in – yes, believe it or not, Williamstown of the 21st century is beautiful. The Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee corridor is new and developing – you can afford a house, there are many facilities for families, and Melbourne is accessible. Melbourne has everything (MCG, Collingwood FC, Eddie McGuire and the Footy Show) so life is good. By Commander Peter Steel, RAN JP2077 and the move from RAN to DMO…. My previous knowledge of Joint Project 2077 – MILIS had been restricted to a roadshow, a few phone calls and emails while OIC FLSE-W, with in reality little or no knowledge as to its mechanics and what the future would potentially hold for my organisation. My life changed quite dramatically, when my partner advised me she had won a promotion to a position within Land Systems Division in Melbourne and I should talk to DNOP about a ‘potential’ posting interstate. I had already been posted to Victoria four or five times during my twenty five years service but the difference now was that there was only a handful of LCDR GLSU Q positions available... and then JP2077 within the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) was thrown on the table. I had received varying career advice over the previous few years as to what to do post Charge but one continuing theme was “You need to move into the Defence Material Organisation to achieve more rounding for your career!!”. I have to say that it was definitely a true statement and no amount of training or preparation could assist when moving into the world of a Joint Project or DMO. The mechanics of the organisation and magnitude of what is trying to be achieved is overawing to say the least. There are not so many uniforms, and they are predominantly involved as Stakeholder Liaison Officers or Subject Matter Experts, but there are a substantial number of Public Servants and Contractors providing various specialities to the overall Project itself. There are also many and various Stakeholders who all review the project from their own bailiwick. Project staff then coordinate JP2077 from an overall Defence perspective to bring the final product together. Yes, all going well they will be ‘flicking the switch’ on 26 October this year. The project itself has provided some interesting times for me to say the least and for the first time in many years I am now out of my comfort zone as an OPLOG specialist and doing something very new and potentially rewarding. From a personal perspective the first thing I did when I arrived back in Victoria was head straight to Vic Roads and have my Richmond Tiger number plates put back on the car and drive around the MCG seven or eight times…. Melbourne is definitely the sporting capital of the country and has a lifestyle which is second to none. As for the weather here, Victorians have a saying, “if you don’t like the weather wait fifteen minutes!!” By Lieutenant Commander Tony Clough, RAN When I first heard that I was being posted to DMO and Project JP2077 (Military Integrated Logistics Information System), I thought where is that and what would a Supply Officer be doing in that organisation? A million acronyms later and one year on I am still here and enjoying the job immensely. I am currently in the role as Stakeholder Liaison Officer, which is an important link between the Service Stakeholders and the Project. There is never a dull day and each Stakeholder has their individual requirements from a Logistics Systems. A posting to DMO has given me an enormous insight into Project Management in particular IT projects. We are a Tri-service organisation giving opportunities to work with Army, Air Force and civilians. Working at RAAF Williams provides you an opportunity live in Melbourne. Furthermore, there are chances to conduct private study. A posting to DMO gives you a bit of everything, stability, some travel, project experience and much more. By Lieutenant Chris Duke, RAN Deployable and Maritime Systems (DMSYS) is part of the Directorate of Logistic Systems Sustainment, which in turn is part of the Logistics Systems Program Office, [and yes that’s right, once again] which belongs to the Material Systems Information Branch of the Defence Materiel Organisation. Now after all of that, what do we actually do here? As the name suggests, we manage the Deployable and Maritime logistics applications such as SLIMS, AMPS, APLCRATES, SALIRS, NAVCMC, NAVALLOW, DLDIP and SBA 2000. The staffing of DMSYS is a balanced mixture of Military - both permanent and reserve, as well as civilian members (all ex military as it turns out). The current billet structure is as follows: PoSition SO2 DMSYS AMPS Mgr Maritime Configuration Mgr Op Support – NAVY Applications Op Support – SLIMS/DLDIP MFU LSA Tech Support Mgr – AMPS AMPS FMMS Tech Analyst Tech Support Mgr – SLIMS Op Support – Misc Applications As you can see from the billet structure above, there are a few opportunities for a post DSO SO and Naval Stores personnel to obtain some insight into the systems that they use on a daily basis at sea. These positions all prepare the incumbents for an easier transition back into the fleet. The web ticket system, known as CIMS – Chameleon Incident Management System, has proven to be a very effective way to record and action client service request, as well as provide information visibility and feedback to clients. Anyone looking for a challenging job in the Melbourne area should seriously look at applying for these positions. Even if you think you know all there is to know about SLIMS or AMPS, you don’t! Just ask the current staff, they will tell you. Between the two LEUTs and the three CPOs we have a combined total of about 115 years in the “Puss”, and we are all still learning. Throw on top of that the three ‘civvies’ with a combined total of around 80 years in the forces and the APS, you can guarantee that we will be able to provide the assistance that you require.
