Maritime Logistics Community News : Autumn 2010
12 NAVY SUPPLY NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2010 Both of these projects are expected to be completed by the end of June. To date a number of Major Fleet Units (MFU) and Fleet Logistic Support Elements (FLSE) are now conducting business using the Quicken package; a number of personnel who I have spoken to already have indicated a positive reaction to the package and its practicality. LEUT Kevin Lewis, RANR is currently undertaking the re-write of ABR 97; this rewrite is a significant milestone for the Steward's category, as a complete re-write has not been undertaken since the mid 60s. A re-write of ABR 97 is required to ensure that the standards required in the undertaking of duties in HMA Ships and establishments and the procedures necessary to achieve those standards are more clearly defined and standardised. Once completed ABR 97 will detail the definitive duties and responsibilities for all ranks within the Steward's category and the various regulatory requirements under which the category operates consistent with Defence instructions (General) and other regulatory authorities. A review panel of Senior Stewards has been nominated to assist in the review of the completed draft document prior to submission to the sponsoring authority Directorate of Navy Logistics (Requirements and Sustainment) for acceptance. When surfing the net have you ever thought of looking at hospitality websites to assist in broadening your knowledge within the hospitality industry? DNCM actively encourages you to continually expand your professional knowledge external to Defence wherever possible. Though we are uniquely different from our civilian hospitality counterparts, the information provided through hospitality based websites could assist us in the further development of our hospitality knowledge and skills. There are a number of websites dedicated to the hospitality industry from both Australia and overseas including one that I particularly liked titled 4 Hoteliers-Hospitality, Hotel and Travel News (www.4hoteliers.com). This site has the latest news from the hospitality industry and great feature articles. On article I found interesting was Traffic-Flow Management - An Essential Component of Hospitality Training (www.4hoteliers.com/4hots_ aprt.php?mwi=939&tfn=F). This article relates to how we can better manage customer contact, especially when confronted with multiple customers at one time. Though this article focuses on a hotel reception area, the techniques they describe can be used in any area that has a potential to deal with a large amount of customers simultaneously. I encourage you all to have a look at this website and you never know, there maybe something there that could be useful to you when completing your every day duties. It is also a great tool for those who need to complete "Develop and Update Hospitality Industry Knowledge" as part of the Competency Task Journal for Seaman/Able Seaman Stewards.
