Maritime Logistics Community News : Summer 2010
29 NAVY SUPPLY NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2010 Congratulations to the editorial team and I hope you enjoy reading the newsletter as much as I do! In my last column I provided a brief outline of an exciting proposal then in the planning stages for a qualified entry Reserve Supply Sailor scheme. Detailed planning for this work has, in large part, led to a much broader body of work around workforce planning and integration. While we often talk about these challenges in the Reserve world, the Head of Supply Community (HSuC) and DGRES-N have agreed to take some far-reaching ideas forward. I am pleased to advise that as a result of the joint work of the DNCM team and DNRS, the SAC endorsed a paper to go forward to the next meeting of the Navy People Committee (NPC). In short, the proposal seeks to expand the numbers of 'part-time' positions available within Navy in order to better support the work, family and lifestyle choices that we all make at different times of our careers -- whether as PN or Reserve members. It is hoped that this proposal, when fully implemented, will make it very simple for members to transition to and from part-time work and other 'casual' workplace arrangements, as much as for those moving in and out of the service. Thanks to the leadership of HSuC, DGRES-N and the vision of SAC members for their strong and unanimous support in getting this proposal to the NPC DGRES-N and DNRS are briefing Reservists on this initiative, and others, during their national briefing program in October / November this year. Hopefully many of you will attend (or may have already attended) a briefing session in Darwin, Cairns, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne or Brisbane to hear first-hand. If you don't know dates or times then look up the NR website or contact your local RRP or shopfront. Once again, if I could remind all Supply Reservists that it is your responsibility to support your own 'individual readiness' by attending local forums and meetings, being in touch with your local shopfront, and staying in touch as far as possible. At the 11 November meeting of the Navy People Committee it was agreed that DGNP in consultation with DGRES-N and HSuC would develop a comprehensive work plan for the Supply Integrated Workforce Model for presentation to the Committee in May 2011. This is considered a positive step and one which the SAC will continue to keep a close eye on. I will of course keep you all posted on developments.
