Maritime Logistics Community News : Summer 2010
42 NAVY SUPPLY NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2010 With the ever increasing operational tempo of the Cairns Based Fleet Units (CBFU) and the Navy Resident Units (NRU) of HMAS CAIRNS, the challenge presented to the Fleet Logistics Support Element-Cairns (FLSE-C) is to ensure we continue to provide an optimal level of administrative and operational logistic support. In order to provide this level of support FLSE-C has had to establish a dynamic organisation that consist of both uniformed and non uniformed personnel who are responsible for all areas of logistic and administrative support from: purchasing, provisions orders, naval stores (including warehousing, clothing store and medical store), governance and compliance, service funds and of course operational relief. To date, this year has been an exceptionally busy period for FLSE-C, we have supported numerous visits by RAN Major Fleet Units and Foreign Naval Units, transitioned from AMPS to SLIMS onboard HMA Ships LEEUWIN and MELVILLE and like all parts of the ADF rolled out and begun operating MILIS (to varying levels of success!!). NAVAL STORES The reduced footprint of supply-trained personnel on Non Self Accounting Major Fleet Units (MFU) and Minor War Vessels (MWV) imposes certain logistic responsibilities on their Command Team in addition to their primary roles. Although these responsibilities are briefly covered on course (ie Commanding Officer (CO)/Executive Officer (XO) Design Course) and during handover periods upon posting, the rise in minimum-manned platforms with their increasingly self-sufficient focus requires a more State in Focus: HMAS Cairns Living in the tropics of Far North Queensland can sometimes be perceived as laid back and relaxing, however when you are responsible for RAN unit's stretching from Townsville to Thursday Island including 14 Fleet Units over four differing platforms, life can certainly be fast paced and challenging.
