Maritime Logistics Community News : Summer 2010
43 NAVY SUPPLY NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2010 effective means of providing non-supply personnel with clear and easy to follow directions on functions that fall outside their core area. This is where the Naval Stores component of FLSE-C stands to and provides direct support and advice to these units. Although HMA Ships LEEUWIN and MELVILLE have a junior Supply Officer and a LSSN posted to them, the material management of these ships still lies with the FLSE. As with most areas within the Australian Defence Force, 2010 has been a year where change has played a significant role in how we support our clients. The introduction of the of the Ships Logistic Information Management System (SLIMS) on Hyrdrographic Ships LEEUWIN and MELVILLE and the roll out of the Military Integrated Logistics Information System (MILIS) have been challenges where it is hoped that the resultant outcome will be an increase in customer support. Although it may be too early to quantify the transition of SLIMS, (in LEEUWIN and MELVILLE) with any objective data, the word from the end- users is that of SLIMS has made life easier and that it has tightened up already established process and more importantly aligned this platform with the rest of the fleet. SLIMS has provided the sole SN with a user friendly system which is "Live" and also removes some of the logistics functions previously provided by the FLSE. The MWV version of SLIMS comes with enhanced functionality including the automatic emailing of End of Period reports to the SAO ashore for audit checks, DIP files being automatically emailed to the DLDIP service desk and with the benefit of the SAO ashore being able to "remote in" to the system providing live data to the SAO to assist the LSSN in the management of their stores and the system itself. The Military Integrated Logistics Information System (MILIS) replaced the Standard Defence Supply System (SDSS) as the core logistics management system for Defence in July 2010. Like most users FLSE-C personnel have had their challenges with the implementation of MILIS. MILIS has removed the need for the Stocktaking Reporting System (SRS) with the addition of the Stocktaking Functionality which has posed further challenges and learning curves to overcome. With the ongoing rectification of problems and ever increasing knowledge of the system users have been able to perform the majority of their tasks to a standard close to that of SDSS which will increase over time and with additional functionality over SDSS MILIS will enable FLSE-C to provide an increased level of operational logistic support.
