Maritime Logistics Community News : Summer 2010
44 NAVY SUPPLY NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2010 mission ready capabilities as we will be able to store ships more efficiently and cost effective in non naval ports. Several billets are set aside for Operational Relief duties. Over the last months we have been able to provide experienced cooks to HS RED Crew, ARDENT 6 and ARDENT 4 at short notice, to ensure these crews were able to remain deployed. Food Services also assisted in setting up the base canteen, providing cooks to help prep menu items during the day, and assisting the staff in procedures of ordering victuals. Food Services has a close association with TS ENDEAVOUR, the Cairns Naval Cadet Unit. In April this year, Food Services held a cadet cooks course, which was aimed at giving selected cadets from around North Queensland, the opportunity to learn basic cooking skills to ultimately earn the cadet rank of cook. On completion of this course it was hoped that the cadets would gain the confidence to return to their local TS and assist in providing basic meals for their TS. The course was the second one held by LSCK WHYTE, and was touted a great success, and we look forward to future opportunities to assist our cadet colleagues. SERVICE FUNDS FLSE-C has been operating the new accounting package Quicken since June 2009. After the initial teething problems, Quicken has proved to be a reliable system which is more users friendly, and most importantly has added a level of accountability that was not previously established in the SBA package. The Service Funds section of FLSE-C is here to provide a service and to guide the Executive Officer's and Canteen Assistants on the CBFU's. We are able to provide all levels of training and advice, in all areas of service funds, from book-keeping 101, budget and business plan development to canteen stock ordering. For the stewards of FLSE-C this is second nature however to our clients the importance of these tasks can sometimes be overlooked as they are not the primary function of that person's onboard position. Our clients have varying levels of motivation towards service funds, we have the Canteen Managers and Assistants who have their returns to us before time (and who love nothing more to brag that their books balance and the stock take has no discrepancies) to the other end of the spectrum where we are required to continually remind the Canteen Managers of the obligations required when operating a canteen. With the majority of our boats being multi crewed it can be sometimes difficult to manage but with the dedication of the staff at Service Funds we do overcome these challenges to provide a professional service that caters for the welfare of the crews posted to the CBFUs. CONCLUSION Although we have small and dynamic team at FLSE-Cairns our achievements this year have been significant. With the continued rise in Op Tempo the challenges that will present themselves in the next twelve months will also be great. However with the culture that is instilled within the organisation these challenges, like all, will be overcome and the level of service that FLSE-C provides will continue to grow.
