20 NAVY SUPPLY NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2011 AHRI – 2011 National Convention The annual AHRI National Convention was held in June 2011 at the Sydney Exhibition Centre in Darling Harbour. BY POWTR AARON SMITH The event is viewed throughout the corporate world as providing an excellent opportunity to hear from some of the greatest minds in HR from Australia and around the world. As Writers, our level of expertise is recognised by AHRI and depending on the level of your rank and education; AHRI offers a range of membership options from Affiliate to Certified Professionals. When the opportunity presented itself for CPOWTR Andy Maskell and I to attend the convention, we seized the opportunity to gain a rare insight into the corporate HR sphere and indeed the future direction of conducting business in the people services area. The primary aim of the convention is to encourage attendees to network with like minded HR professionals to discover new ideas to take back to the workplace. This year 2400 attendees, 1300 delegates, 300 exhibitors and 28 speakers attended the convention, the highest numbers to date. It was held over a two day period, and with the many ‘trade stands’ and key note speakers presenting over the entire time there was always something of interest taking place. The trade stands this year varied in their service from one stop Human Resource Information Systems packages (similar to that offered by our PMKeyS Self Service system) to various universities offering post graduate education packages (mostly Master of Business Administration (MBA) courses) to the many HR professionals. Some of the more stand-out Key Note speakers that we had the opportunity to listen too were: Vineet Nayer (Vice Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and full time Director of HCL Technologies) – He leads a team of 70,218 professionals in 29 countries to drive growth in the IT services industry. Vineet has instituted several radical programs that began a quiet transformation across the organisation. His mantra of ‘employees first’ and a strong belief in value- based leadership has been recognised globally. Fortune Magazine has articulated his leadership style as “The world’s most modern management” and the London Business School calls him “the leader of organisational innovation”. By placing ‘employees first’, the leadership role takes on a completely different form, encouraging a more of an open relationship within the organisation and one that we can adopt in our own work areas. Phil Minns (Deputy Secretary People Strategies and Policy, Department of Defence) – Mr Minns is responsible for developing policies to foster a climate in which people want to join the Department of Defence organisation, want to work at their best, and want to stay. Mr Minns discussed the progression of the Department of Defence toward achieving a strategic perspective on people and HR. Looking toward the future, if we can bed down our practices now and as a category make the commitment to adopting practices that foster a happy and productive workplace, we may find that our category will be full of sailors who will not only work to their full potential but also want to remain in the Navy- this is a win-win situation for all involved. Jonar Nadar (Chairman of management consulting firm ‘Logictivity’) Disconnected from the networked world: How the internet is driving a wedge between them and us’– Jonar is an author, technology writer and was the co-founder of the Australian Information Society. For over twenty years, Jonar has conducted courses on technology, leadership, management, thinking skills, employee engagement, teamwork, advertising, change, fraud, terrorism, and politics. Jonar advises Directors and CEOs at board-level, assisting with strategic planning and organisational growth. He is an award-winning debater, arguing cases relating to censorship, security, customer service, technology in education, and technology in society. Jonar is a particularly extraverted individual who was able to engage the entire audience with his unique personality and sense of humour. Definitely the stand out speaker of the convention, Jonar explained how modern connectivity has fostered unacceptable levels of corporate and social incivility. Everyone is talking about a connected society, social networks, and customers and staff being more connected than ever before. However, sadly and at an alarming rate, Jonar describes that organisations are drifting away from their staff, their customers, and their market. The main message that I took away from this presentation was that as our core Writer roles evolve and we progress further into the ‘digital’ future, we must not forget who our customers are and how we react with them. With the vast majority of what we do now relating in some way to a document scanner and an email, it’s the personal interactions we have that matter the most and will be the key to maintaining a healthy and productive category into the future. Li Cunxin (Best Selling Author, Mao’s last dancer) – ‘Adapting to Change and Rising to Challenges’ - Growing up in poverty-stricken rural China, Li was selected by Madame Mao for the Beijing Dance Academy. After years of gruelling training he became one of the country’s most celebrated dancers. The years of enduring a harsh training regime taught him discipline, resilience, determination and perseverance and Li’s astounding drive and relentless hard work made him one of the best dancers in the world. In 1999, Li made a successful career transition from ballet to finance and he is now a senior manager at one of the largest stockbroking firms in Australia. The rich story of Li’s inspirational life is recounted in his number one best-selling memoir ‘Mao’s last dancer’, now also a major feature film. It recounts his journey and the importance of family value and love, of passion, determination, perseverance, courage and hard work – and of maximising opportunities in life to transform dreams into reality. The values that are important to Li can be related back to our own workplace
