Maritime Logistics Community News : Summer 2011
29 NAVY SUPPLY NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2011 to the FA’s role. The Catering Manager and Command Liaison Officer have previously been filled by Lieutenant Supply Officers. The Commander’s driver position is usually filled by a Steward, although the current incumbent is a Marine Technician. Additionally, a Watchkeeper (J3 operations cell) position is filled by a Naval Lieutenant, often a Maritime Warfare Officer. Intelligence (J2 cell) positions can also be filled by qualified Navy personnel of any rank. The current Chief of Staff is a Commander Pilot, and the Commander ISF has been a Commodore in the past. There are currently two RAN personnel training East Timorese sailors as part of the Defence Cooperation Program (DCP). The DCP play an important role in capability building of the East Timorese Defence Force (Falantil-Forces Defensa Timor- Leste). As my first land-based operational deployment, the FA’s job has provided a sound introduction to the JTF environment. The position is a facilitation and reporting role, providing me with the opportunity to understand the interactions between JTF staff, sub units and other forces, such as the UN and Portuguese Police Force. For those with an accounting background, the job provides a chance to employ those skills in a Joint operational environment. From both a professional and personal perspective, my posting as a FA in East Timor has been very enjoyable. I recommend both the position and country to any Supply personnel looking for an operational posting. About the Author LEUT Chris Clarke joined the Navy as an Undergraduate Entry Officer in July 2006 whilst undertaking a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Tasmania. Postings have included HMAS Tobruk (ASO), Headquarters Fleet Air Arm (Staff Officer Logistics), and is currently posted to the Amphibious and Afloat Support SPO (Material Officer).
