Maritime Logistics Community News : Autumn 2013
39 MARITIME LOGISTICS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2012/AUTUMN 2013 BY LEUT SARA MOONEY, RAN RANRU & ASRU glory For the first time in 15 years the Royal Australian Navy Rugby Union Women's (RANRU-W) team has gone back to back and retained the winner's trophy against our old foes the Army. The combined Navy/RAAF team known as the "Two Blues" slogged out a hard fought war of attrition played out at Victoria Barracks, Sydney (VIC BKS), on the 19 May to come out victorious as 13 to 5 winners. These members included LEUT Sara (Boofa) Mooney (FFGSPO), POML-S Kim (Kimmy T) Thomson (FLSE-D), ABML-SC Saluluelanei (Lulu) Gray (SFSD) and ABML-S Sarah (Beardy) Beard (HMAS HUON). POML-S Thomson and ABML-S Beard showed true grit and determination displaying exceptional skills in the Forward Pack treating the crowd to a display of big hit ups and solid scrumaging. While ABML-SC Gray dazzled in the back line with her speed, line breaks and hard tackling. LEUT Mooney constantly harassed the Army back line with her hard hitting and bruising tackles as open side Flanker who kicked 8 out of the 13 points scored by Navy. LEUT Mooney was awarded the Best Women's Player trophy at the Australian Services Rugby Competition (ASRC) after her gutsy efforts throughout the tournament. LEUT Mooney, POML-S Thomson and ABML-SC Gray have recently preformed to the highest standards representing the Australian Services Rugby Union (ASRU) team against the visiting United Kingdom (UK) Women's Army team. ABML-S Beard was regrettably unable to play the match in question due to work commitments. The match was played on a waterlogged pitch in freezing conditions at (VIC BKS), on the 24 May in good spirits and both sides displayed a high level of technical rugby in poor handling conditions. Unfortunately the ASRU team were beaten on the day 14 to 0 but each member of the ASRU team preformed to an exceptional standard. All four members were selected in the ASRU-W (Warriors) touring team which toured the UK in October for a 3 week period to play a number of games against the UK Services teams. Congratulations ladies on your successful year. The Centennial year of the RAN has certainty been a successful year with four members of the Supply Community representing Navy Women's Rugby Union at both National and Australian Services levels.
