Maritime Logistics Community News : April 2014
19 MARITIME LOGISTICS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER 2014 Cultural and Sporting Funding for Mid-Pac While overseas conducting her Mid-Pacific Deployment, the crew of HMAS Perth (CO CAPT L.J. Goddard, CSC, RAN) have enjoyed use of fleet funding for conducting activities in Hawaii and in Auckland. As of the completion of the Auckland leg of her deployment Perth has utilised over $3,500 on activities varying from a traditional luau dinner and the “Ha- Breath of Life” night show at the Polynesian Cultural Centre on Oahu Island Hawaii to Alpine Skiing in Queenstown New Zealand. This funding has allowed the crew of Perth to participate in alcohol free activities and represent positively the RAN amongst local communities. Fleet funding for cultural and sporting activities have been made available for ship’s companies in port visits away from home port due to recommendation 19 of the HMAS Success Board of Inquiry. The aim of this funding is to provide positive alternatives to activities which may involve alcohol. Two particular sporting highlights for Perth’s crew facilitated by public funding were participation in the Seventh Annual Pearl Harbor Half- Marathon and cycling a Tour de Hawaii. The half-marathon saw 18 members of ship’s company complete a 21.2km course around the Pearl Harbor Naval Base / Hickam Airforce Base running with the likes of US servicemen and women. Proudly, all those who commenced the half- marathon completed it. The Tour de Hawaii was organised internally of Perth by LSMT Ryan Hamill. The tour around the Hawaiian island of Oahu took 2 days with 8 cyclists transiting 144km with 1440m elevation and only 1 support car. With a port visit to Melbourne and Sydney to go until returning to Fleet Base East, there is plenty of time for Perth’s crew to utilise this fantastic initiative.
